The China Institute of Atomic Energy of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and State Nuclear Security Technology Center were designated as the nuclear security cooperation center of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during a signing ceremony held on Sept 10.

The nuclear security cooperation center is the first of its kind in the country. It represents a new milestone for cooperation between China and other countries in nuclear security.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from IAEA and the China Atomic Energy Authority.

It has been reported that CNNC’s China Institute of Atomic Energy has been making great efforts to improve nuclear security detection technology and has been working to develop technology to prevent terrorist attacks involving nuclear explosives and radiation. Nuclear security devices developed by the institute have been applied in civil aviation, long-distance railways, and urban rail transit across the nation and exported to countries such as Tanzania and Uganda.

After the newly established nuclear security cooperation center begins operating, CNNC will push ahead with the research, development, and testing of nuclear security technology. The center is expected to help promote China’s cooperation with IAEA and propel the research and development of nuclear security detection technology.
