China National Nuclear Corporation, one of China’s largest nuclear operators, held a side event on the margins of the General Conference by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna on September 15, a move that signals the domestically-designed HPR1000 nuclear technology was promoted on the global stage.
The promotion activity was followed by a milestone event in last September, when CNNC's HPR1000 nuclear power reactor passed the Generic Reactor Safety Review by the International Atomic Energy Agency, a process that took a year to complete.
“Through this event, we hope to share our nuclear technology- HPR1000 with officials from other countries so that it can play an important role in dealing with energy and environmental problems in those countries,” Sun Qin, chairman of CNNC. “Also, we seek to build a closer cooperation with other participants and countries in the use of nuclear power through the platform of IAEA,” he said.
About 60 officials and experts from the countries such as Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia and South Africa participated the event, according to the official data.
Based on China’s experience in the nuclear power plant construction and operation for more than 30 years, the Hualong One technology, a pressurized water reactor, learned from an innovative achievement in the world’s third-generation nuclear technology design and it meets the highest requirements to the world’s safety standards.
The HPR1000 put forward the combination of passive and non-passive safety design concept, using 177 fuel assemblies as reactor cores. It also has a double-shell containment, which can withstand the clash of large commercial aircrafts as well as the seismic damage.
Unit 5 of the pilot project of nuclear power plant in Fuqing of China’s southern Fujian province started construction on May 7, an important step for China to leverage domestic experience to export its nuclear technology.
The Chinese government has been supporting nuclear industry and CNNC in terms of financing and international cooperation so that CNNC can provide a total financial solution to foreign clients, covering a wide range of financial services such as equity investment and favorable loans.
