Qian Zhimin meets Bill Gates and visits TerraPower
Qian Zhimin, president of China National Nuclear Corporation, met Bill Gates, chairman of TerraPower and Microsoft founder, in Seattle, Washington on Sept 23. Also attending were TerraPower’s chief executive officer Lee Mclntire and representatives from CNNC.
CNNC and TerraPower agreed to jointly promote and develop traveling-wave reactors (TWR), a new type of reactor that can reduce the need for the enrichment and processing of uranium.
Bill Gates reemphasized the significance of working with CNNC to develop nuclear technologies in China, and pointed out that TerraPower and CNNC could play a big role.
During the meeting, Qian Zhimin said CNNC has gained rich experience in self-dependent technology in the nuclear industry, and has collected feedback on the imported technologies.
Qian went on to say that the construction and operation of dozens of nuclear power plants with Bill Gates’ management and technical teams will guarantee the success of fourth generation nuclear technology.
Qian Zhimin led a CNNC delegation to TerraPower, where he discussed the details of TWR projects and communicated with employees at TerraPower.
Qian also introduced the history of China’s nuclear power and CNNC’s achievements in design and operation, as well as his understanding of TWR.
The visit strengthened mutual understanding and is expected to bring more opportunities to both parties.
