Qian Zhimin, president of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), has signed a joint declaration to form a joint venture with Canadian engineering firm Candu Energy, a branch company of SNC-Lavalin and Shanghai Electric.

The joint declaration was signed on Sept 22 during Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s high-profile visit to Canada, where he met with the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

After nearly two years of negotiation, the parties have agreed to jointly develop and promote Candu’s advanced fuel and heavy water reactors both in China and worldwide, and further improve cooperation between China and Canada in the nuclear energy sector.

During his visit to Canada, Qian also visited the Chinese ambassador to Canada Luo Zhaohui, and had a friendly exchange with Jean Chrétien, the former Canadian prime minister.

Qian was also given a tour of Candu Energy to find out more about its business situation and research and development capabilities.
