Wang Shoujun, chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), signed a cooperation agreement with Muhammad Naeem, chairman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), on the construction of Unit 5 of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (C-5) on Nov 21, which is a great achievement the Chinese nuclear industry has made this year.

According to the agreement, CNNC will build a one-million-kilowatt-class nuclear power unit with HPR1000 technology at the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan. It is the seventh nuclear power unit that China has exported to Pakistan and the third unit exported with HPR1000 technology.

HPR1000, a third-generation pressurized water reactor independently developed by domestic research teams, is a key project in promoting the implementation of the Made in China 2025 initiative, and a driving force in realizing the country’s “going global” strategy.

At present, the construction of four HPR1000 nuclear power units by CNNC is proceeding smoothly. They are the only third-generation pressurized water reactors in the world that are being built on schedule.

CNNC has built four nuclear power units in Pakistan so far, with total installed capacity of 4.63 million kWs and operational capacity of more than 1.3 million kWs. It has helped resolve electricity shortages in Pakistan, and boosted the country’s economy and living standards.

The C-5 project will be constructed by CNNC China Zhongyuan Engineering Corp, a subsidiary of CNNC.
