The first reactor coolant pump motor for Unit 2 of the Karachi nuclear power plant (known as Karachi 2), China’s self-developed third-generation HPR1000 (Hualong 1) demonstration project in Pakistan, was lifted into place on Aug 23.
The successful installation is expected to facilitate follow-up cold tests for the nuclear power project, CNNC representatives said.
The four HPR1000 units being built by CNNC are the world’s only third-generation pressurized water reactor nuclear power units to be built according to schedule. All parts of the HPR1000 project, both in China and abroad, have been completed on or ahead of schedule, and all have maintained high quality and safety standards.
Karachi 2 and 3 are the first two examples of the export of China's Hualong 1 design. CNNC is responsible for delivering the projects on a lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) basis.
Karachi 2 and 3 are expected to meet the standards for provisional acceptance in 2020.
