The K-3 Unit of Karachi nuclear power plant in Pakistan, the second overseas nuclear power unit adopting HPR1000 technology, finished first fuel loading recently, marking the unit's entry into the nuclear commissioning stage. This has laid a sound foundation for subsequent criticality and grid-connection of K-3 Unit.
HPR1000 is one of the most widely accepted Gen-Ⅲ nuclear power technologies in current market, based on CNNC’s experience of nuclear power research, engineering, construction, operation and management over the past 30 years. With a designed lifetime of 60 years, HPR1000 adopts 177-fuel-assembly reactor core and double shell containment technology, and combines the high-efficiency of active system with the high-reliability of passive system, which meets the highest international safety standards.
The Karachi nuclear power project will supply stable, green and low-carbon energy to Pakistan, which constitutes a significant part in Pakistan’s effort to optimize its energy mix, and in global effort to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, and address climate change. With a package of localization, the project has improved local capabilities of equipment manufacturing and project management, and created more than 10,000 direct jobs for the local area.
