The first concrete was poured on unit 8 of China National Nuclear Cooperation (CNNC)'s Tianwan nuclear power plant in East China's Jiangsu province, on Feb 25, the start of construction on the main project of this reactor.

Tianwan unit 8 is the first nuclear unit in China to start construction in 2022. It is also part of CNNC's efforts to optimize China's energy mix, build a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system, and help achieve the peaking carbon and carbon neutrality goals.

Tianwan unit 7 began construction on May 19 last year and its construction is currently well under way as scheduled. The two units will generate 18.8 billion kWh of electricity annually after being put into operation, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 15.34 million tons per year.

Tianwan nuclear power plant has completed building six units, generating about 48.22 billion kWh of electricity in 2021, a new record high. The cumulative power generation of the six units during their lifetime exceeds 300 billion kWh.
