The HL-3 project is China's independently developed scientific apparatus of controlled nuclear fusion. The principle of energy generation in controlled nuclear fusion is similar to that of the sun's light and heat production. It is why the HL-3 is also called the new-generation "artificial sun."

The "artificial sun" HL-3 project opened to the public in the end of 2023. This year's first international joint experiment attracted the participation of 17 prestigious research institutions and universities worldwide, which included the French Atomic Energy Commission and Kyoto University.

Controlled nuclear fusion is a frontier and disruptive technology that is aimed at meeting significant national needs. It boasts notable advantages such as abundant resources and environmental friendliness and is considered as one of key solutions to ultimately solving energy issues. According to the long-term development vision of China's nuclear industry, the goal is to achieve the application of fusion energy by the middle of this century.
