On the afternoon of March 6 (local time), the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs, the Swakopmund Municipal Government, and Rössing Uranium Limited, a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), jointly inaugurated the DRC police station at Swakopmund.
The inaugural ceremony brought together Namibian Deputy Prime Minister Hon John Mutorwa, Namibian Minister of Home Affairs, Safety and Security Albert Kawana, Counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Namibia Wei Jinming, Namibia Police Force Inspector General Joseph Shikongo, Swakopmund Mayor Blasius Goraseb, General Manager of Rössing Uranium Chang Jingtao, Board Chairperson of Rössing Uranium Steve Galloway, and Rössing Uranium Managing Director Johan Coetzee.
Albert Kawana delivered the keynote speech. The ceremony gathered about 1,000 attendees, including police officers and DRC community members.
The police station in Swakopmund's DRC informal settlement was by financially supported by Rössing Uranium and completed within six months. Located in Swakopmund's bustling community, the police station serves a community of over 40,000 residents, representing over half of the city's population. Its establishment marks a significant step in strengthening crime prevention and public security in the area. It will play a vital role in safeguarding residents'lives and property, and the building of a safer, more stable, and harmonious community.
Kawana highly praised Rössing Uranium for its outstanding commitment to social responsibility."Your unwavering commitment to corporate social responsibility is commendable and demonstrates a strong partnership between the mining sector and the Government in addressing national security challenges," he noted in his speech.
Since the acquisition of Rössing Uranium in 2019, the CNNC has actively supported Namibia's development initiatives and committed itself to local economic growth, job creation, education, and infrastructural building. Beyond the further improvement of public security, this new police station stands as a testament to the friendship between China and Namibia and the close collaboration between government and enterprise. As another milestone project of China-Namibia cooperation, it has shown firm resolve taken by the two wides to advance security and development together.
