Second overseas Hualong One nuclear power unit passes acceptance in Pakistan

On April 18 local time, the K-3 unit of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant in Pakistan, the second overseas nuclear power unit built with China's Hualong One technology, met all final acceptance requirements. This milestone marked that both units (K-2/K-3) of the first overseas Hualong One project have been successfully delivered to Pakistan, reaffirming the technological maturity and international adaptability of China's self-developed third-generation nuclear power technology. This project offers a replicable Chinese solution for clean energy under the Belt and Road Initiative, serving as a vivid example of China and Pakistan joining hands in advancing a closer community with shared future in the new era and strengthening their strategic cooperative partnership.

The Karachi K-2/K-3 nuclear power units in Pakistan are key energy cooperation projects under the Belt and Road Initiative and flagship projects for the export of China's nuclear power technology. The K-2 unit passed its final acceptance in 2024, setting the record for both the shortest construction period and best performance of the first overseas unit with the third-generation nuclear technology. So far, the two units have generated over 48 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, significantly easing Pakistan's power shortage. They have also reduced the consumption of standard coal by 14.97 million tons annually and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 39.16 million tons, supporting Pakistan's energy transition, low-carbon development, and long-term sustainability.

The K-3 unit began construction in 2016 and achieved provisional acceptance in April 2022. Through close cooperation and joint efforts between China and Pakistan, the K-3 unit received perfect quarterly performance scores from the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) in 2023 and 2024, demonstrating the reliability and strength of China's nuclear power technology.
