Unterweser gets decommissioning approval
German utility PreussenElektra has announced that the decommissioning and dismantling of the Unterweser nuclear power plant (KKU) can now start, following approval from the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection. The approval is pursuant to Section 7 (3) of Germany's Atomic Energy Act.

Leningrad II-1 brought to minimum power
Russia has today brought unit 1 of the Leningrad Phase II nuclear power plant to the minimum controllable power level, state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced. The assembly of the reactor vessel for the unit, which is in Sosnovy Bor in western Russia, was completed in early January.

NJ files new legislation recognising nuclear benefits
New Jersey legislators have filed an amended version of a bill that would recognise the environmental and fuel diversity attributes of the state's nuclear power plants after a previous version stalled at the end of the last legislative session. Russia and Sri Lanka plan nuclear energy cooperation
Russia and Sri Lanka have held talks this week on establishing cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Nikolay Spassky, deputy director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, met with Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and Susil Premajayantha, respectively Sri Lanka's minister of power and renewable energy and minister of science, technology and research, on 16-17 January.

Lift nuclear ban, MCA tells Australian government
The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has repeated its call for the Australian government to lift a ban on the development of nuclear power. Australia must reform its taxation, industrial relations, environmental and energy policies to shield the nation from future economic downturn and deliver stronger economic growth, the council said in its pre-Budget submission to the federal government.
