Bulgaria invites investment in Belene project
Bulgaria's National Electricity Company (NEK) yesterday announced a call for selection of a strategic investor for the construction of Belene nuclear power plant on the Danube River near the Romanian border. The call also allows for expressions of interest to acquire a minority shareholding in the future project, as well as and/or to purchase electricity from the future power plant.

General contract signed for Tianwan Phase IV
The general contract has been signed for the construction of two further Russian-supplied reactors at the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China's Jiangsu province. In addition, a technical design contract was signed for a second pair of reactors at the Xudabao site in Liaoning province.

Sellafield silo has waste retrieval equipment installed
Installation has been completed of the equipment needed to remove material from the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS) at the Sellafield site in the UK. Demonstration removal of waste is scheduled for later this year, with larger scale removal operations set to start in 2020.

Finnish EPR receives operating licence
The Finnish government today granted utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) an operating licence for the first-of-a-kind EPR at Olkiluoto. Once it enters commercial operation early next year, the 1600 MWe pressurised water reactor will supply some 15% of the country's electricity demand.

The leaders of South Korea and the United Arab Emirates have said the two countries will seek opportunities to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy beyond their current collaboration on the Barakah nuclear power plant project. This will include opportunities in third countries.

Construction progress at Bangladesh plant
Concrete works have been completed for the turbine hall foundation slab of Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant, Rooppur 1, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom has announced. Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) says the first unit will be commissioned in 2023.
