NDA to take over management of Magnox sites
Magnox, owned by Cavendish Fluor Partnership (CFP), is the management and operations contractor responsible for safely managing 12 nuclear sites and one hydroelectric plant in the UK working for the sites' owner, the NDA. CFP won the GBP6.1 billion (USD8.0 billion) contract in September 2014 in a tender the NDA started in April 2012. However, NDA announced in March 2017 that contract will be terminated in September 2019, after five years rather than its full term of 14 years.

First AP1000 unit begins generating power
Unit 1 of the Sanmen nuclear power plant in China has been connected to the grid, becoming the world's first AP1000 to achieve grid connection and power generation. The milestone came just one day after Taishan 1, also in China, became the first EPR to reach the same milestone.

Russia, Rwanda establish nuclear energy ties
Russia's Rosatom and the Ministry of Infrastructure of Rwanda have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The document was signed on 22 June by Rosatom Deputy Director General Nikolay Spassky and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Rwanda to the Russian Federation Jeanne d'Arc Mujawamariya.

IAEA emphasises vital role of uranium
For the foreseeable future, most new nuclear power technologies will still run, wholly or partially, on uranium, so it is important that this vital resource is mined, produced and managed sustainably, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano said this week. It is also essential to take full account of environmental concerns, "both to ensure public acceptance today and to avoid troubling legacy issues in the future", he added.

Chinese AP1000s pass commissioning milestones
The start of power generation by two AP1000 reactors under construction in China moved a step closer yesterday with first criticality being achieved at Sanmen 1 and the loading of fuel beginning at Haiyang 1. Both units are expected to start up by the end of this year, becoming the first operating AP1000 reactors.

Approval for decommissioning of Swiss reactor
Swiss utility BKW has been issued with a decommissioning order for the Mühleberg nuclear power plant, which is scheduled to permanently shut down at the end of 2019. The order from the country's Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC) states the decommissioning work must be carried out in accordance with a plan submitted by BKW in 2015.

Decommissioning plan for Tokai approved
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has today approved the decommissioning plan for the country's oldest reprocessing plant. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) announced in September 2014 that it would permanently shut down the reprocessing plant in Tokai, Ibaraki prefecture.

China signs up to four new units from Russia
Russia and China have signed four agreements envisaging the construction of four VVER-1200 units at Xudabao and Tianwan, cooperation in the CFR-600 fast reactor pilot project, and supply of the RITEG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) parts for China's lunar exploration programme. The signing ceremony was held today in Beijing and attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Barakah 1 start-up schedule revised for operator training
Fuel loading at unit 1 of the United Arab Emirates' first nuclear power plant will now take place in late 2019 or early 2020. Nawah Energy Company said the updated start-up schedule reflects the time required to complete operator training and to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals.

Japanese utility seeks to start up new reactor
Chugoku Electric Power Company has today requested permission from local governments to apply for pre-startup inspections of unit 3 at the Shimane nuclear power plant in Japan's Shimane prefecture. Construction of the 1373 MWe advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) is nearing completion.
