Ontario meets first refurbishment target
April 17, 2019
The reactor core of Darlington 2 in Canada has now been rebuilt, owner and operator Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has announced, celebrating the installation of all its fuel channels. It is the first in a programme of ten reactor refurbishments.
Atomexpo: Nuclear is the key to sustainability

Nuclear energy has a role to play in all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015 by the United Nations, delegates heard yesterday at the opening ceremony of the XI International Forum Atomexpo 2019 being held this week in Sochi, Russia. Alexey Likhachov, director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, thus stressed the motto of this year's event: 'Nuclear for better life'.
Novovoronezh II-2 cleared for launch
April 12, 2019
Unit 2 of the Novovoronezh II nuclear power plant in southwest Russia started the process of physical launch yesterday after having received regulatory approval to do so, Rosenergoatom, the operator subsidiary of state nuclear corporation Rosatom, has announced. The VVER-1200 reactor was brought to the minimum controlled power level on 22 March.
New technology allows in-situ waste characterisation

Personnel from the US Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (EM) working at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) are using new technology to perform in-situ characterisation of the contents of hundreds of radioactive waste containers prior to shipment for permanent disposal.
China installs steam generator at Tianwan unit 6

The second of three steam generators at China's forthcoming Tianwan 6 nuclear power unit has been installed, completing a 12-day process that involved bringing the component through a hatch and rotating to a vertical position.
Site approval for Egyptian nuclear power plant

Egypt's Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) has received a site approval permit for the El Dabaa site from the Egyptian Nuclear Regulation and Radiological Authority (ENRRA). The permit acknowledges that the site and its specific conditions comply with national and international requirements.
Viewpoint: Finland seeks to streamline licensing

Finnish power companies are looking for ways to streamline licensing and qualification processes through a new project started last year called KELPO. The first part of the project has been completed and it is moving ahead to the pilot phase, writes Tuomo Huttunen, senior advisor on nuclear power at Finnish Energy, which represents about 260 companies that produce, acquire, transmit and sell electricity, gas, district heat and district cooling and offer related services.
Russia completes upgrade of third Smlensk RBMK
March 28, 2019
Rosatom has announced completion of life-extending modernisation work at unit 3 of the Smolensk nuclear power plant, the last of three RBMK-1000 reactors at the site in western Russia. The other two units are already set for an extended period of operation of 15 years.
