The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Oct 1 promoting its nuclear powers solutions to its counterparts in the country by demonstrating its strength and solutions, especially in the manufacturing, construction, operation and financing of nuclear power projects.

The Brazilians showed great interest in the information and say they are willing to work with the Chinese in the construction of new nuclear power plants, one CNNC rep said, and that they hope to learn something from China’s experience and get some financial support from China.

The president of the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities, Antonio Ernesto Ferreira Müller, said they need to communicate with foreign countries on various aspects, such as construction, maintenance and utilization of new technology to develop their own nuclear industry.

Müller said he appreciates how China has gained much experience in the safe operation of power plants and that it is a potential partner for Brazil, which is one of the only two countries in Latin America, -- the other being Argentina -- with nuclear power stations. Brazil’s nuclear power plants contribute 3 percent of the country’s total power and it plans to have four more nuclear power units by 2030.

CNNC says it can meet Brazil’s technological, financing, and localization needs and come up with winning solutions.
