Premier Li Keqiang met with Bill Gates, Microsoft founder and chairman of Terra Power, at the Zhongnanhai compound in Beijing on Nov 3.
Li spoke positively about cooperation between the two sides on the research and development of new-generation nuclear power technologies. He said that he was enthusiastic about the establishment of a joint R&D venture looking at traveling-wave reactors, a new breakthrough in the field.
The premier stated that safety is an essential prerequisite for developing nuclear power and that new technology must be reliable and secure.
He also said that the new industrial revolution is proceeding to a higher level while the internet provides vital support. Li said that China is carrying out innovation-driven development and making use of the Internet Plus Initiative, to accelerate economic transformation and upgrading.
"We wish to further international cooperation to make technological breakthroughs, and achieve a sharing and better life for mankind by developing China's advantage in rich talent resources and using internet-based platforms," he added.
New-generation nuclear power technology is vital for mankind to develop energy in the future, Gates said. He also expressed his appreciation for the partnerships with Chinese companies as well as his willingness to help turn a vision into a reality.
