Tianwan nuclear power plant advances Phase III project
Units 5 and 6 of Phase III at Tianwan nuclear power plant in Lianyungang in East China’s Jiangsu province – reactors being built by China National Nuclear Corporation, or CNNC -- have resumed construction gradually, according to Jiangsu Nuclear Power Co Ltd.
Officials said that more than 3,000 workers had returned to work incrementally, while ensuring comprehensive prevention and control measures for the novel coronavirus outbreak.
They said that on Feb 10, the first batch of 72 nuclear power fuel elements for Phase III project was safely delivered to the nuclear power plant.
This paved the way for preparations for fuel loading of unit 5 -- and on Feb 24, a security inspection video conference was held to ensure the progress of on-site engineering commissioning.
The construction of the unit 5 reactor of Tianwan nuclear power plant started in December 2015. Officials said it is being constructed in accordance with the highest domestic and international safety standards.
Following more than four years of construction, the main structure of the project has been basically completed and the hot performance test has been successfully completed.
The project is currently looking forwards to the first loading of nuclear fuel, officials said.
Units 5 and 6 at the Tianwan nuclear power plant each has a capacity of 1,118 megawatts.
When the latest two reactors go online, power station’s total installed capacity will exceed 8,000 mW, generating power exceeding 60 billion kilowatt-hour annually -- effectively meeting the power demand in Jiangsu and East China, according to officials.
