Two units of the first overseas project of HPR1000 officially delivered
Unit 3 of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (K-3) was inaugurated in Pakistan on Feb 2, meaning that the two million-kilowatt Hualong One units exported to Pakistan, K-2 and K-3, have now both officially been delivered to Pakistan and put into operation.
The HPR1000 (Hualong One) is a third-generation nuclear power piece of technology independently developed by China and a landmark achievement in China's innovative development of nuclear power. From a name card of China to an international brand, the HPR1000 shines along the Belt and Road as the event marks the completion of the first project of the HPR1000 in Pakistan.
Through joint efforts, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has built two nuclear power stations in Pakistan with a total of six nuclear power units. Among them, the Karachi K-2/K-3 nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Pakistan and the first million-kilowatt-grade single-unit power project in Pakistan. Since entering commercial operation, the K-2 and K-3 units have generated nearly 20 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, effectively alleviating the power shortage in Pakistan, as well as making positive contributions to Pakistan's social and economic development, energy security and independence, and addressing climate change.
At the same time, the K2/K3 project has provided more than 60,000 jobs for the local people throughout the whole cycle and trained a large number of local industrial workers. The CNNC has delivered benefits to the Pakistani people with concrete actions: donating money for people affected by flooding and helping to build flood control dams, supporting the development of local education and donating school supplies to elementary schools, and playing a positive role in the prevention and control of COVID-19.
Throughout, the CNNC has spared no effort to foster the active, safe and orderly development of nuclear energy and to deepen international nuclear energy cooperation. Having established ties with over 60 countries along the Belt and Road, the CNNC will work to shape more model B&R projects, boost the coordinated development of the global energy governance system, and build a community with shared future for mankind in terms of nuclear energy development.
