Workshop on the Application of Small Modular Reactor held in Hainan
The Interregional Workshop on Technology Development and Application of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) was convened on Sept 4th in Hainan, China. This event was co-hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), with China National Nuclear Power (CNNC) as the organizer. Over 200 government officials and experts from more than 50 countries and regions, including China, France, Brazil, gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on SMR technology, its development, user requirements, and safety oversight.
As a typical representative of nuclear energy innovation, SMR has outstanding advantages such as diverse applications, flexible deployment, environmental friendliness, and high safety. It has excellent development prospects. Official data indicate that there are more than 80 types of SMR technologies that are under development worldwide. CNNC is rapidly advancing SMR technology and its industrial development. The Linglong One is CNNC’s innovative nuclear reactor developed with independent intellectual property rights. It is the first small modular pressurized water reactor unit to pass the IAEA's general safety review. It is expected to be put into operation by 2026. Furthermore, the world's first High Temperature Reactor-Pebblebed Module has successfully connected to the grid and generated electricity, and the low-temperature heating reactors have started to provide heat to residents.
